Thanks to
fragbert for the birthday wishes (yes my wife passed them on to me and just to prove you wrong, I went and read it... so there :P).
For a "wonderful" birthday present, I was fortunate enough to experience (first-hand), the deleterious effects of "our part" of the ice-storm that has been sweeping the nation. Last night on the way home from work, I became stuck in the ice on a long freeway off ramp (that slopes up gradually). Shortly after that, I was rear-ended by a young lady who was going too fast and could not stop (or steer around me) because of the ice. It was raining (freezing rain) and was, overall, a sucky night. By the time we started walking away from our cars, to safety, there were approximately 12-15 vehicles all stuck on the ramp. We traded info at a 24-hour convenience store/gas station and her Dad came to get her and offered me a ride home, which I gratefully accepted.
The truck is still there, because the weather is worse now than it was last night. Many of the counties around here have issued a "Level 3 Snow Emergency"... which means: "No vehicles allowed on the road except emergency vehicles." So, you get a ticket if they catch you on the road. I called the cops when I got home (more than 2 hours after the wreck), they said that the Sergeant in charge on the scene (so the police eventually came), said that my truck was far enough off the road that they were not going to move it. It also means that the snow-plows will bury it when they come by *facepalm*. Wonder when I will be able to retrieve it?
Today, I called the 800 number to report to my employer that I would be absent today. Basically, the automated system makes a note in the computer that you are going to be absent (or late) and then connects you to the store you work at and you talk to a manager to notify them personally. Today, I got the Big Cheese... the Store Manager. The conversation went something like this:
Me: Hello Sir. This is Michael O. I just wanted to let you know that last night while driving home from my shift, I got stuck in the ice and then rear-ended. My truck is still there. Because of 'that' and the weather conditions, I will not be able to work my shift from 3pm to 11pm.
Big Cheese: Oh... [disappointment very apparent] Okay, Michael. So will you be in tomorrow?
Me: Um, no sir. I am not on the schedule Thursday or Friday, and I do not know when I can retrieve my truck.
Big Cheese: Oh... [more disappointment]. Okay then. Thanks. Bye.
I feel for the guy. Yesterday, there were 27 call-ins on 1st and 2nd shift alone. (I wish I had gone with my gut and called-in yesterday as well). I wonder if the 3rd shift people who came in (there were very few), made it home safely. He probably has almost no one running the store... on the up-side of that, he probably has very few customers to take care of.
Anyway, I think we'll make birthday brownies, or something... since Sheryl could not go get cake yesterday because of the weather.
I'm thanking God that I made it to my 46th birthday. Last night could have been worse.
